WORK ETHICS AND THE GRASS ROOTS EMPLOYEES

Employers of today are increasingly faced with the challenge of hiring employees on whom they can depend. Dishonesty is rife among the elite and well educated and their dubious practices can  result in losses for the Employer and litigation from affected clients and possibly the State.

On the other side of the spectrum one hears a lot of pride in the voices of those who profess to be grass roots and their boasts of having their ears to the ground, but I often wonder how many  understand what the words really mean. Roots ought to denote strength and stability as can be seen on the mountainside when trees are cut down with the resultant floods where previously there  were none.

On the work site therefore these Grass Roots men and women are supposed to be the ones whose skills are unrivaled, who will give an honest day's work for an honest day's pay, and who can be trusted to obey instructions before being trusted to give instructions.

The truth is though that what applied forty years ago seems to have escaped some of our generation of today as many leave the perception that they are totally oblivious to what constitutes proper "work ethics", the unwritten  wisdom in their "work being their signature so they should sign their names with excellence", and being so efficient that they will be further recommended to fill permanent positions when the opportunity arises.

The challenge facing Employers therefore is how to treat with the employee of today given the fact that not everyone will subscribe to the goals and aspiration of the employer. Many are given probationary periods ranging from one month to six and even up to two years, but if the Supervisor is unable to transform worker enthusiasm into worker efficiency the result will be continuous employee turnover, wasted financial resources on retraining, regular downtime, loss of  consumer trust, and dissatisfaction among permanent and regular workers.

Today I've pointed  out these facts which every employer would have experienced as they strove to achieve the successes to which they aspire when they chose to invest their funds and their efforts into their dreams. Over the next few days I will address  employees' concerns.
