EMPLOYEES' CONCERNS - Conclusion

This concludes my four part series of Employees' Concerns, a survey done by me in 2007 to help identify some of the workers concerns prior to a one day workshop at which the Employers representatives were present. I've recently done an evaluation to determine the levels of success achieved subsequent to this and other surveys and have been amazed at the changes the department has undergone since then and the cooperation that exists between Management and workers.

RECOGNITION/REWARDS /SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE

 Workers have complained about their peers being shortchanged when receiving awards for Excellence or Service.

 It was believed that Monthly paid Employees have in the past been given the superior reward or recognition.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

 Daily rated employees have no safety net in terms of continuous terminal benefits, with no pensions or annuity.

 Many retired workers are seen to be in need or in danger of being destitute shortly after retirement.

 This leads to discontent and fear of the future (after 60-What!)

RESOLUTION OF PERSONAL AND FAMILY ISSUES

 This was felt to be difficult to achieve because of the frustrations within the home at all levels as a result of today’s high cost society.

 It was also felt that few supervisors really cared about the daily rated workers and viewed their problems as coming from troublesome persons.(Union).

SAVINGS

 The demands upon the wages of the Daily rated workers have made it difficult for them to make any meaningful investments for Income generation or savings.

 Several claim to feel guilty of abusing the loan system of the Credit Union to make ends meet.

TRAINING AND FURTHER EDUCATION

 This is not visible or readily available and if offered is thought to be not designed to improve job performance or productivity levels.

 It was generally felt that not enough thought is being given to the training of new workers or the retraining of others as many seem not to fully understand their job specifications neither are they able to cope with the latest technology or innovations.

TRAVEL

 Travel opportunities are usually reserved for Monthly paid staff in spite of specialized training being required in some work categories which are available abroad.
